Wake up! Hit Hard by the Corona Crisis

Wednesday, May 20, 2020

In March the first term of the year was well on its way with 80 children registered and the 30th Year Independence Celebration of Namibia forthcoming. Staff members were preparing for our 10 Year Anniversary and inauguration of the new classrooms, but then Corona announced itself and now the centre is closed!

2020 already had a rough start. The economic crisis is hitting poor communities hard and our parents struggle to pay the fees necessary to operate the centre. Parental fees must cover 75% of our expenses; the other 25% is raised by our friends in The Netherlands. The government still does not subsidise early education.

With regards to Corona: to date according to the authorities, Namibia has had 16 cases of the virus, and no (official) deaths, but little testing is taking place. A full lockdown was proclaimed starting the 28th of March. The Ministry of Education initially brought the May-holiday forward, but end of April it was announced that Early Education Centres will only be allowed to resume the 3rd of August.

As parents are not expected to pay fees during the months of May, June and July (and most did not pay for April either) the centre is in crisis. The Board of Trustees in Windhoek has shared with the staff that only 50% of their salary can be guaranteed for this period. The staff will still come to the centre two days a week to stay in contact with parents, prepare activities for children at home and prepare for teaching in August.

In August we hope to resume in full force, but anticipate further financial constraints, as many parents will have lost income and therefore will be even less able to afford school fees for their little ones. To help us stay afloat, any donation will help.

Our third and last extension to the centre

Ivo, a Dutch volunteer

Our third and last extension to the centre gained momentum quickly. We are extremely grateful to Guangxi Construction, the Wild Geese Foundation, Stichting Fonds Neven en Nichten van Zadelhoff, Solidariteits Fonds Keizersgrachtkerk and all our regular sponsors who have enabled us to finish this 10 year project, which started in 2010. The three new classrooms will be ready by the end of July and will be a sight to behold!

On the photo you see Ivo de Been, one of our fundraisers from The Netherlands, who came to volunteer for three weeks in May. The playhut is now repaired and the jungle gym got a proper maintenance job. His enthusiasm, encouragement and handiwork set a great example for any volunteer to come!

New classrooms underway

Thanks to the fundraising efforts of our partners in The Netherlands and generous financial assistance from the Wilde Ganzen in particular, we will realise the third and last phase of our building plan this year and add three more classrooms and a flat to our centre. The works started this week!

Celebrating another year

Celebrating another year

This month we celebrated the achievements of another year. All the children have grown and matured this year and were eager to show their stuff during their concert.

The toddlers amazed us with their enthusiasm, their confidence and dance moves. The pre-schoolers presented us with drama, songs and dance. The graduates looked grown up and proud in their green and yellow gowns.

We were happy to have a chance to say thank you to Teacher Birgit who for the second year has been teaching Yoga to our 5-year olds. We see evidence that these sessions help children to calm down and focus in class.

There will be 19 children leaving us for Grade 1. We wish them all the best and hope to keep in touch!
